All Aboard for Dreamscapes: Overnight Train Travel Makes a Central European Comeback

Central Europe is rediscovering the romance of the rails. After decades of decline, overnight train travel is experiencing a resurgence, fuelled by a growing desire for sustainability and unique experiences.

The last rays of the Prague sunset cast long shadows across the busting main hall of Praha hlavní nádraží. But Elara wasn’t battling crowds or the stress of security lines. Instead, she strolled calmly towards the sleek, streamlined form of the new European Night Jet, a stark contrast to the weathered locomotives of yesteryear. Tonight, her journey from Prague to Brussels wouldn’t be a cramped, hurried flight, but a scenic adventure on rails.

Traditionally, night trains were the backbone of European travel. However, the rise of discount airlines in the late 20th century led to a decline in their popularity.  But the tide is turning. Environmental concerns and a renewed appreciation for slower travel have led to a renewed interest in this eco-friendly mode of transport.

Gone are the days of solely budget airlines dominating the travel scene. Today’s eco-conscious travellers are seeking immersive experiences, and night trains deliver in spades. But with a growing number of companies offering sleeper services, navigating the options can be tricky.

Leading the Change

Austria’s ÖBB has been a key player in this revival with its “Nightjet” network. Launched in 2016, Nightjet offers comfortable sleeper cabins and couchettes, connecting major cities across Central. In late 2021, they introduced a new route between Vienna and Paris, further expanding their reach.

ÖBB Nightjet offers a variety of sleeping options to suit different budgets and travel styles. Passengers can choose from comfortable sleeper cars with private compartments and en-suite bathrooms, to more budget-friendly couchette coaches with reclining seats.  Additionally, some routes even allow travellers to bring their car or motorbike, making them an ideal option for exploring Europe by road once they reach their destination.

New players are also entering the scene. European Sleeper is shaking things up with innovative sleeper carriages. European Sleeper is part of the movement that put the overnight sleeper train back on the European map. It was founded by two entrepreneurs Elmer van Buuren of Train2EU and Chris Engelsman of Noord West Expres. They currently offer a single route – Brussels to Prague – but their ambitions are high. Their sleek, modern trains boast private compartments with en-suite bathrooms and high-tech amenities.

Known for its comfort and focus on sustainability,  Thello operates routes within France and to neighbouring countries like Italy and Spain. Their flagship service, the sleeper train from Paris to Venice, is a romantic journey through the heart of Europe. Opt for their “L’Etoile” category for a truly luxurious experience

Spain’s national railway, RENFE, operates the comfortable “Trenhotel” sleeper trains. These connect major Spanish cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon, offering a relaxed way to travel between these vibrant destinations.

While these are some major players, it’s important to research before booking. Consider factors like budget, desired level of comfort, accessibility needs, and the specific route you want to travel. Many companies offer online booking and virtual tours of their carriages, allowing you to make an informed decision.

Sustainable Travel with a Scenic View

The environmental benefits of overnight trains are undeniable. Compared to flying, train travel produces significantly lower CO2 emissions. Additionally, night trains allow travellers to maximize their time, arriving refreshed and ready to explore their destination the next day.

The journey itself is part of the allure. Imagine gazing out the window as the Central European countryside unfolds under a blanket of stars. Night trains offer a unique opportunity to unwind, catch up on reading, or simply enjoy the rhythmic rocking of the train.

Europe’s iconic night trains offer undeniable charm: waking up in a new city after a scenic journey. But before booking your romantic rail adventure, consider the downsides. Compared to budget airlines, night trains can be significantly pricier, especially for groups or families needing multiple bunks. Tight quarters might not suit restless kids, potentially disrupting sleep for everyone.  Accessibility can also be an issue. While some trains offer limited disabled access, navigating narrow cabins and potentially steep steps can be challenging. So, for budget-conscious travellers, large families, or those with accessibility concerns, it is important to compare the romance of the rails against the practicality of a plane.

The Future Looks Bright

The future of overnight train travel in Central Europe appears bright. With growing public and political support, we can expect to see further investment in infrastructure and expansion of existing routes. The future of European night trains lies in expanding networks and fostering international cooperation.

So, next time you’re planning a trip through Central Europe, consider leaving the flying to the birds. Embark on an adventure aboard a night train and discover a more sustainable and scenic way to travel.
