Join us on a very festive and musical ride through the streets of Clermont-Ferrand with the music duo Malaka! This is the perfect way to (re?) discover the city that is at the heart of Europavox Campus, the first European music springboard for students, organised by Europavox and four universities across Europe, including the Université Clermont-Auvergne. The Coopérative de Mai, an emblematic Clermont-Ferrand venue, will host the regional step of the contest and the big European finale of Europavox Campus next April. In the meantime, follow the guides!
Malaka is a sister duet who formed during lockdown, and they stand out due to their voices. Two highly distinctive textures, distinct both from each other and from anyone else, they come together to take a natural approach to life, performing along with very refined accompaniment. In Clermont-Ferrand, they had an opportunity to be part of the Festival Europavox programme following their participation in the Pulsation springboard organised by the Crous (Centre régional des oeuvres universitaires et scolaires – French student service). They found this a rewarding experience that they would like every group aiming at a professional career to enjoy! They are continuing along their way and making their name in other towns and cities, but today they’ve come back to Clermont-Ferrand to introduce us to some cultural sites with a rich musical background that are also great places to meet people. Here’s what they recommended…
La Coopérative de Mai
When we were students, we tried to grab every opportunity to listen to some live music, and “La Coopé” was one of our go-to places for this with their after-work events and most of all the showcases where local artists had a chance to shine!
Le Fotomat’
This is a really cool concert hall and bar where local artists often perform, with only a small fee to pay at the door to help them out. With a technical team worth their weight in gold and an ultra-eclectic programme, this is what we love.
La BBC
A bar-restaurant that holds open mic slots every Wednesday night. Everyone there loves music; you can feel that straight away.
Le Caveau des Anges
What with concerts, open mic nights, and jam sessions, there’s always something going on here. This is where we took part in our first-ever Jam, hehe!
Radio Campus
This is a community radio station that really makes you feel welcome with their varied and local-leaning playlists. They are really open to new talent and act as a partner in loads of events. We’ve already played sessions there and told our life stories on air several times, and the team working there is great.
Rimshot
We signed up there for dance lessons (which we strongly recommend), and it turned out that they also organise concert evenings and provide shared trays with food and drink. Such a great spot to discover local talent, both from here and elsewhere.
Le Crous
We know all about their work with student grants and housing, but they also play a crazy big role in the student cultural scene – offering a free rehearsal room, holding competitions, holding free concerts, hosting exhibitions… They have done, and continue to do, such a lot for us!
